My Almost Epic Summer by Adele Griffin:

Irene starts out her summer by being fired from her mother’s, that’s right mother’s, hair salon.   But is immediately given a job offer of the oh so much fun job of babysitter.  Irene is not so pleased with the idea at first, but decides to take the job and use the down time to work on her journal with drawings of hairstyles of famous female characters in literature, for her future salon.  While taking the kids to the local public swimming pool she meets Starla the life guard, and instantly becomes obsessed with her.   She wants to become her friend.  Starla too beautiful for her own good and used to being able to manipulate people takes Irene under her wing.  Starla has only been dumped by one boy and can’t seem to get over it.  She uses Irene to help her get even.  Will Starla’s plan backfire? Will Irene ever find out that Starla is a manipulator? Read to find out how things unfold.
